Proof-of-Concept through Innovative Science and Engineering

At BC Research Inc. and NORAM Engineering and Constructors Ltd., we specialise in transforming bench-scale research into larger scale pilot and demonstration systems. Our team of engineers and scientists with demonstrated expertise in process scale-up deliver solutions that are both technically sound and operationally efficient. We design modular pilot and demonstration plants that can be operated either at our BC Research Inc. facility or shipped directly to our partner sites. Our partners may also choose to host their pilot or demonstration systems within the 40,000 sq ft (3700 m2) pilot plant space at our Technology Innovation and Commercialization Centre.
Together with our partners at NORAM Engineering and Constructors Ltd., our piloting services span the full project lifecycle, including process engineering and design, procurement, fabrication and skid construction, on-site commissioning. We also offer pilot plant testing at our facility, as well as ongoing technical support when testing is conducted at external sites. We work closely with our partners to ensure their pilot plants generate the high-quality data needed to confidently advance projects to the next stage of development. Our team has experience in developing automated and semi-automated pilot and demonstration systems for bioproduct processing, and electro- and thermochemical processes.
When operating at our facility, our partners gain access to our research services and infrastructure, including wet laboratory space and a comprehensive analytical chemistry lab. This integration allows process development and piloting activities to occur in parallel, providing immediate technical feedback to accelerate optimisation cycles.
Most small-scale skids are fabricated in-house through our dedicated fabrication shop, which enables rapid prototyping, refinement, and deployment of early-stage systems. For larger installations, we work closely with our sister company, Axton, who specialise in the fabrication of full-scale skids and equipment. Through Axton-Ellett we are also equipped to work with specialty metal alloys capable of withstanding extreme chemistries, temperatures, and operating environments, ensuring that even the most demanding pilot and demonstration systems are built to the highest standards of safety, durability, and performance.
