Electrochemistry

BCRI is experienced in electrochemical pilot development, process integration and piloting: for carbohydrate modification, organic synthesis, and salt splitting, many of which involve the co-production of hydrogen. BCRI has extensive experience designing complete electrolyzer systems including the cell stacks and balance of plant for a variety of chemistries. BCRI’s Innovation Center in Richmond hosts a number of electrolysis pilot plants.

BCRI has expertise in:

  • New electrochemical process development.
  • Deep knowledge of both electrolysis and electrodialysis systems.
  • Conceptual design and technology evaluation for electrochemical systems.
  • Development of custom electrochemical cells.
  • Scale-up of new electrochemical platforms from the laboratory scale (e.g. under ~200cm2), through intermediate scale (under ~0.5 m2) to full scale cells of 1.5m2 and larger.
  • We have access to our own cell platform, can design custom cells, or can work with partners for cell implementation.

NORAM Electrolysis Systems

BC Research hosts the NORAM Electrolysis Systems pilot plant – a versatile facility that:

Is uniquely suited to the conversion of lithium brine streams derived from salar, spodumene and thermal brine sources into high-purity lithium hydroxide for the Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) industry.

Is adaptable to salt-splitting of by-product waste chemicals such as sodium sulphate Na2SO4 for recycling into valuable chemicals for re-use.

Facilitates the development of pre-treatment protocols ahead of electrochemical processing to optimize cell performance and durability.

Allows extended pilot plant campaigns on disparate brine chemistries.

Offers a platform for novel Anionic (AEM) and Cationic (CEM) Exchange Membrane development and scale-up.

Can be configured for two-compartment or multi-compartment electrochemical reactions.
